"Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”
Thereasa believes that this quote, that can be found at Ellis Island, defines America's stance on immigration. We cannot abandon immigration or turn our backs on immigrants. They, together with American citizens, are what has made our nation great. Immigrants cannot be blamed for all the woes that exist in America and they should not be targets of bans based on hatred or fear of a religious group. Thereasa will make sure that our borders are not closed off to immigrants and prevent fear and hate from guiding our nation's law.
Thereasa knows that many people who enter the country illegally are acting out of a need to protect their family members or themselves and that the 3 and 10 year bar discourages people who have entered America illegally from attempting to gain legal citizenship. We need to create a pathway to citizenship for those who enter the country illegally that doesn't include separating individuals from their family and life in America for unreasonable periods of time.
